So I have been wanting to write this blog for some time now. Almost every day I think someone asks me about what I do, and how I made my blog a business.
As mum’s, it can be hard to find our way back into the workforce. And for a lot, what we did prior, may no longer be an option. Financially it isn’t viable. Or perhaps it’s just not fulfilling us like it used to – this was certainly the case for me!
I think after having children, you come to realise what’s really important to you, and sitting in a job that isn’t rewarding or enjoyable can really be a downer!
A lot of women have said to me that they never intended to be ‘stay-at-home-mums’, they just felt they couldn’t find a job that had the flexibility they needed – something I know first hand!
When I went back to work after having Annabelle, I really just felt like I was there to make myself feel better I was contributing financially at home. But in no way did I enjoy the job anymore or feel like I was going anywhere. Lump on the guilt of putting my child in daycare and stress of dozens of missed days of work because of endless sickness – I was miserable! (And I’m pretty sure my employer wasn’t my biggest fan)
After quite a few months of I guess being a “miserable cow” my husband told me “he’d rather I didn’t work and was happy then working and being sad, no amount of money was worth my happiness” (thanks husband, you’re a keeper).
But it wasn’t that I didn’t want to work, I just wanted to be doing something I enjoyed and I also didn’t care how much money it made me! So I decided I wanted to get back into something marketing and PR related, and told myself that my physical location shouldn’t be a barrier (something I’d convinced myself of earlier).
Something that I have always loved and always believed in is education, and truly believe that you can never learn enough! You should always be up-skilling and learning new things if you want to stay ahead – so that’s exactly what I did!
I decided to give this blog thing a red hot go! I signed up for online courses on web development, SEO, design programs and everything in between! I attended workshops and still to this day jump at the opportunity to learn new skills!
A lot of reputable institutions, including my old stomping ground Monash University offer online solutions like Monash Online, which allows you to study postgrad degrees and graduate diploma’s anywhere, anytime!
They have one on one student support, and you can connect not only with tutors, but also other students in real-time through interactive online learning. Making it a perfect solution for busy mums who cannot commit to scheduled classes and full time work loads!
I truly believe that why I have been able to make this amazing community my workplace as well is because I followed my passion and did what I wanted to do, not what I thought I had to do! And of course get to work from home with my girls (okay it’s a struggle but it’s worth it)
I know some people might say they don’t have that kind of opportunity or cannot financially make it work, but honestly neither did I! We are by no means ‘well off’, we budget like there is no tomorrow and we make a lot of sacrifices to make things work – but gosh golly is being happy in what you do more valuable than anything else in the world!
My advice to any mums out there worrying about returning to work, unhappy in their current role, looking for change or needing that push to take a risk and truly follow their passion, remember this – “Do something you love and you’ll never work a day in your life”!
