Mum Guilt. It’s like a common cold, easy to catch and you never build up an immunity to it!
It feels like everywhere I turn there is something…
Had a caesarean birth – mum guilt.
Couldn’t breastfeed – mum guilt.
Going back to work – mum guilt.
Let my kids watch TV – mum guilt.
Spent money on myself – mum guilt.
House is messy – mum guilt.
Didn’t play with my kids enough – mum guilt.
Lost my temper – mum guilt.
Childcare – mum guilt.
Baked beans for dinner – mum guilt.
Not feeling guilty – MUM GUILT!
It seems like no matter how much you tell yourself “it’s okay, don’t be so hard on yourself, CHILL OUT WOMAN” it still manifests in our minds – I guess because ultimately we are hard wired that way!
As mum’s we just want to do the best and be the best we can, but “best” is not always going to be one defining norm.
And so while we know it’s never really going to go away, I do think it’s important that we try and remember that while it is a flaw, it is also a gift! The gift of caring, it’s just what us mums do – we care so much, that it’s too much!
And I guess you can only treat the symptoms, not the cause… WINE IT IS!
