Honestly – It feels like the last ten Fridays have been Black Fridays. Is it just me, or do the sales start earlier every year? Honestly, I’m expecting a “Black August” any day now. But here we are, still counting down to the official Black Friday, and if you’re anything like me, you’ve already been bombarded with “early access deals” and “pre-pre-Black Friday” emails.
Now, before you go full shopping cart warrior, let’s talk about how to navigate these sales like a pro. Because, trust me, I have been known to buy something “things” LOL. So when I tell you I’ve had to learn how to rein in the emotional spending and shop with intention, you can believe I know what I’m talking about…
So here’s how to prepare for Black Friday, shop smart, and maybe even come out of it with some money still in your bank account.
Before you get sucked into the vortex of “limited time only” deals, sit down and make a list. What do you actually need or want? Is it a new appliance? Christmas gifts? Or are you just here for the vibes? Prioritise your list so you don’t end up panic-buying something ridiculous – take it from the girl who always buys ridiculous shit LOL
Pro tip 1: Research the prices now so you know whether that 60% off is legit or just clever marketing.
Pro tip 2: Use Google to compare prices across different stores and check price history. Some items go on sale every other month, so don’t let the FOMO fool you into paying more than it’s worth.
Set a budget. I mean it. Like, really set one—don’t just say, “I’ll try not to spend too much.” Because here’s the thing: a $20 impulse buy here, a $30 deal there, and suddenly you’re wondering where all your money went – Know your limits and stick to them.
“Limited stock!” “Not coming back in stock!” “Buy now or regret it forever!” – sound familiar? Black Friday marketing (okay all marketing) is designed to make you feel like this is your one shot at happiness. Spoiler: it’s not. Take a breath and remember, it’s okay to miss a deal. There will be another one. There’s always another one.
Look, no one’s handing out medals for Black Friday shopping. If you don’t need or really want anything, give yourself permission to sit this one out. The sales will still be there next year, and so will your money. The best way to save on Black Friday is to not spend at all. I promise, your future self will thank you.
Girl, put those skills to good use…. Not all deals are created equal. Some stores inflate the “original price” so that the discount looks bigger. Be your own Sherlock Holmes and dig a little deeper. Use tools like Honey, ShopSavvy, or Google Shopping to compare prices and check if you’re actually saving money.
And if you’re shopping online, don’t forget to look for promo codes or stack those savings with cashback offers.
Some deals come with sneaky strings attached. Shipping fees? That “free gift” that’s only free if you spend $200? Or, my personal favorite, cashback deals that only apply to very specific partner products. Always check the terms and conditions before you commit—otherwise, that amazing deal could end up costing more than you thought.
If you’re not already using loyalty or cashback programs, you’re missing out. Programs like Qantas Shopping, Cashrewards, or Shopback let you earn points or cash on purchases you’re already making.
How to pick the best one? Check which program offers the highest cashback rate or points on the retailers you’re shopping with. It’s like having your cake and getting a discount on it too.
Most have a Chrome extension you can load onto your browser and tell you their current discount or offers!
This one’s simple: if you can’t afford it, don’t buy it. A $500 TV at 50% off isn’t a good deal if it puts you in debt. If you’re using a credit card, make sure you can pay it off before interest sneaks in. Otherwise, you’re not saving money—you’re just borrowing future stress.
Ughhhh, what are you my therapist? No, but I recon I’d make a good one HAHA Did you stick to your list? Did you stay within budget? Or did you, like me once upon a time, end up with three cute coloured toasters because “they were just so adorable”? Learn from what worked and what didn’t, and you’ll be even better prepared for next time – we are always learning and growing, sis!!
Black Friday is meant to be an opportunity to save on things you truly need (or really want).
But it’s not the end of the world if you don’t buy anything or skip it altogether. Go into it with a plan, stick to your budget, and don’t let the marketing machine trick you into spending money you don’t have.
Whether you find the deal of a lifetime or decide to sit this one out, the best choice is the one that keeps your sanity—and your wallet—intact. Happy shopping (or not shopping)!
