If you’re planning a trip to Shanghai Disneyland, you’re in for an unforgettable experience. The park only opened in 2018, so it’s very new and this is reflected in a lot of the rides and how modern they are! It is also the biggest castle built in all the parks!

It offers all the Disney magic with a unique cultural twist. But like any adventure, there are a few quirks to navigate. And this was the hardest park to navigate and work out for me, but so glad we did!!

Here’s everything you need to know to make your trip as smooth as possible…

Before You Go:

Here’s what you need to know before your trip:

1. Payments: How to Pay in China

• China is pretty much cashless and your bank cards and ApplePay etc will not work!! Apps like Alipay and WeChat Pay are the most commonly used.
• You can set up Alipay International or link a foreign card to WeChat Pay before arriving in China. Both apps are widely accepted in the park and around the country.

2. Download and Log Into the Shanghai Disneyland App

This app is your park guide, helping you check wait times, make dining reservations, and navigate the park. Important: Download and log in to the app before you leave home and link your tickets! Once in China, even with a VPN, the app might not function properly. Learn from my mistakes!!

3. Use a VPN for Internet Access

China’s internet restrictions mean apps like Google Maps, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp won’t work without a VPN. Even then, they’re often slow or glitchy. Test and install your VPN before you travel, and consider downloading offline maps or using WeChat, which works seamlessly in China.

4. Entry Requirements

• Your passport is a must—not just for getting through customs but for entering the park itself – your ticket is linked to it when you book.
• Be prepared for fingerprinting at immigration when you arrive in China. It’s standard procedure and usually quick.
• Australians can enter China for up to 15 days without a visa – FYI

Getting There

Getting to Shanghai from Australia is relatively straightforward, with direct flights available from major cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. Airlines such as Qantas, China Eastern, and Cathay Pacific often offer direct or one-stop routes to Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG).

And I recently saw Juneyeo Airlines also launched direct flights from MElbourne, worth checking out!

Flight costs vary depending on the season, with economy fares typically ranging from AUD 800-1,500 for a return ticket. Direct flights take around 10 hours. But I highly recommend a stop in Hong Kong for a little more DIsney magic 😉

HOT TIP: I got Qantas Reward flights in business class on Cathay Pacific (via Hong Kong). These cost me $800 in taxes and around 90,000 points per person. Economoy seats one way are avaliable for around 39,000 points plus taxes. Here is an example…

Where to Stay

Want to stay close to the magic? Here are the best options:

• Shanghai Disneyland Hotel: Luxurious, Disney-themed, and perfect for families. Starts around AUD 500 per night.
• Toy Story Hotel: Fun, colorful, and budget-friendly at AUD 250 per night.
• Courtyard by Marriott Shanghai International Tourism: Nearby, comfortable, and affordable at AUD 150 per night.

Park Tickets

Tickets can be purchased online via the official Shanghai Disneyland website or platforms like Klook, which often offer discounts. Bonus? Use my code OLIVIAWHITEKLOOK for 10% off, because who doesn’t love a good deal 😉

Ticket prices vary based on the season, and will get more expensive the close to the day – so book early or look for deals!! That being said I found it to be a VERY affordable park.

Ticket Costs:

• One-Day Ticket:
  • Weekdays: AUD 90-120
  • Weekends/Peak Periods: AUD 130-160
• Two-Day Ticket:
  • Weekdays: AUD 175-230
  • Weekends/Peak Periods: AUD 250

Important: You’ll need to link your tickets to your passport at the time of booking. Without this step, you won’t be able to enter the park.

Zootopia Land

Shanghai Disneyland is the only park in the world with a Zootopia-themed area, and it’s nothing short of incredible. However, I will note that I thought it was a lot smaller then I expected, especially given the size of the overall park.

There is only one ride in the area currently, Zootopia: Hot Pursuit. But it’s also a very well done area and super pretty, make sure you visit it at night!!

How To Plan The Perfect Day

Here is an idea of how to get the most out of your day!!

Morning

• Staying at the hotels or purchasing early entry so you get in an hour before the general public.
• Arrive early—like 30 minutes before gates open. The early bird catches shorter lines.
• Head straight to Zootopia: Hot Pursuit – this ride gets busy fast. Followed by TRON.
• If you get these done quickly, head to Soarin’ it’s a classic ride but ALWAYS has a huge line.

Midday

• Explore Fantasyland and snap photos in front of the stunning Enchanted Storybook Castle (it’s the largest Disney castle ever built).
• Grab lunch at Royal Banquet Hall for a sit-down meal inside the castle. Make sure you book as it does book out!

Afternoon

• Cool off with a relaxing ride on Voyage to the Crystal Grotto or head to Snow White and  Roaring Rapids in Adventure Isle.
• Take a break for character meet-and-greets on Mickey Avenue.
• Check for parade times and either nab a good spot to watch or use this time to jump back on busy rides while people are distracted. Ride times often drop!

Evening

• End your day with the Ignite the Dream Nighttime Spectacular, there is nothing like Disney firework magic!! I suggest getting priority viewing so you get the best view!! Well worth it!!

Unique and Must-Ride Attractions 

Shanghai Disneyland is a really special park with heaps of exclusive rides and experiences. I found it very “high-tech” and had a lot of twists on rides that have been reimagined to a whole new level. Here is my favourite…

TRON Lightcycle Power Run: It’s unlike any other Disney coaster, where you mount the bike and are leaning forward on motorbike-style seats. It’s super cool and fun to ride.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure: Pirates is one of my favourite rides across the parks so you bet I was jaw to the floor when I rode this. This isn’t your typical Pirates ride! Shanghai’s version takes the classic attraction to the next level with a trackless boat system that makes you feel like you are in the movie

Soaring Over the Horizon: While versions of Soaring exist in other Disney parks, Shanghai’s version is a little different and has been tailored for the Chinese audience, always love this ride!!

Best Time to Visit

I always recommend for people to check a crowd predictor, just pop it into Google and check the time you want to go. Often it will alert you to any dates that might be blocked out or expecting huge crowds!

Avoid peak times like Golden Week (early October), Chinese New Year, and school holidays if you value your sanity.

We went late November and it was pretty cold but sunny days and not very busy at all. Longest line might have been 20 minutes!!

Merchandise

One of the best parts of visiting Shanghai Disneyland is the exclusive merchandise. From unique apparel to adorable souvenirs, you’ll want to save some luggage space (or bring an extra bag—no judgment!).

• Exclusive Mickey Ears: Shanghai Disneyland boasts a range of Mickey and Minnie ears that you won’t find in any other Disney park. They often feature designs inspired by Chinese culture, local celebrations, and exclusive attractions like TRON and Zootopia.
  • Average Cost: A set of ears costs around AUD 30, so take advantage while you’re there—these make the perfect keepsake or gift!
• Zootopia Merch: Check out Fashions by Fru Fru in Zootopia Land for themed clothing, plush toys, and other souvenirs featuring Judy Hopps, Nick Wilde, and friends.
• TRON Lightcycle Gear: Perfect for the sci-fi fans in your life (or yourself), TRON merch includes everything from sleek tees to glow-in-the-dark accessories.
• Disney Pins: Shanghai Disneyland offers unique pin designs that are perfect for collectors.

Pro Tip: Shop toward the end of your day to avoid carrying bags around the park. Or better yet, use the Disney package pickup service so your purchases are ready for collection when you leave.

Disneytown

Even if you’re not spending every waking moment in the park, Disneytown, located just outside the gates of Shanghai Disneyland, is worth exploring. 

• Cafes and Restaurants: There are heaps of options, especially for your morning coffee before you hit the park!! We also ate at  The Cheesecake Factory which is literally everything you can think of and a safe family option.
• LEGO Store: This flagship store is a paradise for LEGO fans! You can even collect exclusive stamps for your LEGO passport, a must for any LEGO fan.
• World of Disney Store: Your one-stop shop for all things Disney, offering everything from plush toys to apparel. And no ticket needed as it’s outside the park.
• Entertainment: Disneytown hosts live performances and seasonal events, so check the schedule during your visit.

Disneytown doesn’t require a park ticket, so it’s a great option for winding down after a long day of rides—or even for a laid-back visit without heading into the park. Especially for the night before or morning after you have tickets so you can grab the merch you want!!

Discount Shopping Nearby

If you need a break from all the pixie dust (or want to treat yourself), head to the Shanghai Village Discount Shopping Complex, just a stone’s throw from the park. It’s home to luxury brands and outlets offering great deals—think Gucci and other designers at a discount. Perfect for a little post-Disney retail therapy!

There is also some really nice restaurants and cafes, we spent a lovely afternoon here and found some pretty good bargains!!

Final Tips for Your Disney Adventure

• Pack Smart: Comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are non-negotiables. And bandaids, cause your toe might fall off, like mine LOL
• Don’t Forget Your Passport: You’ll need it to enter the park and for any ticket checks.
• Plan Ahead: Use the app to map out your must-dos and save time in queues.
• VPN and e-sim: Without one, navigating in China can be tricky. I used Airalo for my e-sim!
